Billy Logan 2023 Maple wood from Cattaraugus Territory Black Walnut Base
In Search of the Cure: Bear Clan Effigy Warclub uses the warclub as a metaphor to connect the warrior spirit of our ancestors of the Hodinohso:ni people. The bear clan members are the keepers of the medicine and are protective of the young or future generations. His ability to thrive and work in harmony with nature are the attributes we seek from his wisdom and experience.
This ballhead warclub was hand selected from a fallen maple tree on the Cattaraugus Seneca territory and was hand hewn from one solid branch junction piece. The forestock is decorated with haudenosaunee symbols from various historical influences, including beadwork, pottery, painting, and carvings. The strawberry plays an influential role in the growing and harvesting cycles and is the first to bear fruit, and a welcoming of the fruit is met with a strawberry festival, which occurs during the summer solstice in June.
The strawberry has many medical uses, with the whole plant being used for multiple ailments, and so is the association with the bear clan. The shape and color of the strawberry are reminiscent of the heart and are consumed during Thanksgiving and blessing at this time. In addition, a strawberry drink is consumed to the delight of all to show appreciation for the harvest.
The warclub is finished with a handmade black walnut stain which was made from the husks of the black walnuts harvested in the fall. Finally, a light red ochre wax is applied to give a subtle red hue as many warclubs were given as sacred protection to the warrior.
